How to bet on NFL odds

There are plenty of different ways to bet on NFL games and betting on your favorite NFL team has been around for as long as the league itself. US sportsbooks provide odds for every single game of the season and tons of future and prop bets even before the NFL season kicks-off.

If you are a US sports fan and watch the NFL, you are likely to have already placed a bet on the NFL, but you might not have known all of the different NFL betting odds available. It's our job USleaguesbetting.com to share our expert knowledge of how NFL odds work and provide some intel on what you need to understand before you place a bet online at a US online sportsbook.

NFL Straight Bet Odds

Placing a straight bet is the most popular and most simplistic form of NFL wagering. There are two ways to place an NFL straight bet, picking a points spread or betting the money line odds. In order to win a straight bet, you need to correctly pick the team that wins the match or cover the points spread.

Before every NFL game, a sportsbook will create a line or a point spread in an attempt to even out the odds for the game between a big favorite and an underdog. For example, a much better team or a team that always performs well at home will be the favorite and the points will be spread to make the match-up fair from a betting odds perspective. The point spread odds make the game more equal for both teams and more entertaining for the bettor.

NFL Point Spread Odds Explained

The best team might be a 2 point favorite with an online sportsbook to win the game, so if you place a point spread bet on the favorite to win they need to win the game by at least 2 points for your bet to win.

How much you can win on a bet is defined by the moneyline odds. The moneyline is the positive or negative number listed with the point spread (-110 /+100). An example of standard NFL betting odds line looks something like this:

Patriots +4 (-110)

Seahawks -4 (+110)

Wagering on the Patriots to win by more than 4 will return $100 for every $110 you wagered. Placing a bet on the Seahawks where they lose by less than 4 will earn you $110 for every $100 wagered. When the game ends with the favorite winning by exactly 4 points the bet is a tie and you get your original stake back.

NFL Moneyline odds Explained

If you don't want to place a bet on the point spread, you can just bet on the final outcome of the game by picking the best moneyline odds. The moneyline is similar to the +110 / -110 number in the point spread, but the moneyline odds will be much higher or lower based on which teams are playing. The hot favorite NFL team might be listed as -270, which means you will need to bet $270 to make $100, while the underdog could be priced at odds of +340, bagging you a sweet $340 from every $100 you wager.

NFL Over-Under Odds Explained

The second most popular type of NFL betting is placing a wager on NFL over-under picks. The sportsbook will publish over-under odds on their predicted total score and you bet on the outcome of the game being lower (under) or higher (over) than the bookies' prediction.

You are betting on the scores of both teams combined. If you don't like the straight bet odds or think it's a close call, you can bet on the total.

If the bookies set an over-under line between the Patriots and Seahawks of 40.5, and you wager on the under, you need the final combined score of under 40 points to win, and it needs to be 41 and up if you take the over. So if Patriots win 22-18 you win and if you took the over and the final score was 24-17 you'd also win.

NFL Parlay Odds

Parlays are for people who want to win bigger on their bets by combining the outcomes of picks into a single wager. Within reason, a US sportsbook will allow you to pick as many outcomes as you like and the more picks you include will give you higher odds. But if one game lets you down, it's game over for your parlay bet.

NFL Futures Odds

If you are looking for higher NFL odds and winning big, then futures is the right bet for you. The Super Bowl is the most popular NFL futures bet and every February after the final you can pick an outsider to win at impressive odds.

NFL Prop Bet Odds

A prop bet or proposition bet is when you can wager on anything that happens in a game. This is a great way for someone who isn't really a gambler or doesn't care who wins, to place a bet to have some skin-in-the-game while watching a huge televised event like the Super Bowl.
